Identify your goals

People visit Financial Advisors for a variety of reasons. Some people want advice for a specific set of circumstances and others might feel more comfortable setting in place a long term plan so that they can become financially independent.

CIPL’s clients have goals which include owning their dream house, travelling overseas, setting up investments to fund their children’s education expenses and buying an investment property. Other clients want to establish an investment portfolio while some want Superannuation advice, or advice associated with a redundancy or retirement.

Before visiting your preferred Financial Advisor, it is important to think about what you want and what your goals are. Once you have clearly described what you want, your Financial Advisor is much more likely to be able to devise a strategy which is designed to help you achieve your goals.

If you need help setting goals you might need to take some time to think about what you want, (or what you don’t want!). There are a number of models that you can follow to help you to identify your goals.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What do you want to change?
  • What do you want more of?
  • What do you want less of?
  • What do you want to achieve?
  • When you get to where you want to go, what will it look like?
  • What will it sound like?
  • What will it feel like?
  • When you achieve what you want, what else will it help you to do?

After you have answered these questions, you will have a clearer picture of what you want to achieve. And then, as you are no doubt aware, it is important to discuss the answers to these questions with your partner.

Of course, having shared goals with your partner will provide you with the extra motivation that you sometimes need when the going gets tough! And remember your goals are not necessarily set in concrete - they can change as you grow and your circumstances change.

Taking your written goals to your Financial Advisor will mean that you are on the road to achieving what you want!
